The Australian Sikh Gurdwaras Council (ASGC) strongly condemns the unethical actions of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) under the influence of Akali Dal Badal’s political agenda, which is undermining the sanctity and sovereignty of the Akal Takht Sahib.

What is the Akal Takht and its Importance for Sikhs?

The Akal Takht, located in the Sri Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar, is the highest temporal seat of authority for the Sikh community. Established by Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji in 1606, it symbolizes justice, sovereignty, and the unity of the Sikh faith. The Akal Takht issues Hukamnamas (edicts) that guide the Sikh community on matters of faith, ethics, and social justice. It is a cornerstone of Sikh identity and spiritual governance.

Who is the Jathedar?

The Jathedar of the Akal Takht is the appointed leader responsible for upholding the principles of Sikhi and ensuring the sovereignty of the Akal Takht. Sikhs worldwide regard the Jathedar as a spiritual and moral authority, and his Hukamnamas are considered binding for the Sikh community. The Jathedar’s role is to protect the sanctity of Sikh traditions and ensure the Akal Takht remains free from political interference.

Recent Unethical Actions by SGPC

Following the Hukamnama (edict) issued by Akal Takht Sahib on December 2, 2024, Sukhbir Singh Badal and key members of his party publicly acknowledged their wrongdoing and accepted the punishment and directives given by the Akal Takht. However, in the aftermath of this incident, a sudden and orchestrated hate campaign was launched against the Jathedars of the Akal Takht. This campaign led to the removal of Giani Harpreet Singh under questionable circumstances followed by recent Remove of Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Sultan Singh from their positions. These actions appear to be politically motivated allegedly under the influence of Akali Dal Badal’s political agenda, is a blatant violation of Sikh traditions, and aimed at undermining the authority of the Akal Takht and its Jathedars. These actions are seen as an attempt to control the Akal Takht and undermine its sovereignty.

ASGC’s Stand

The Australian Sikh Gurdwaras Council (ASGC) condemns these actions in the strongest terms. We are deeply concerned about how these politically motivated decisions are damaging the sovereignty of the Akal Takht Sahib and eroding the faith of the Sikh community worldwide.

The ASGC calls upon the entire Sikh Panth (Sikh Sangat) to unite against the SGPC and Badal Dal’s abuse of power. We urge Sikhs worldwide to stand together to protect the sanctity of the Akal Takht and restore the traditional system of appointing Jathedars, as established by the Puratan (ancient) Sikhs in form of Sarbat Khalsa.

The ASGC reaffirms its commitment to upholding the principles of Sikhism and will continue to advocate for the independence and sovereignty of the Akal Takht Sahib.
